Trimless and recessed downlights for UK projects
Light Division is the official UK partner for Modular Lighting Instruments. This guide helps UK architects and M&E consultants choose trimless (plaster-in) and recessed Modular downlights for clean ceilings on residential, hospitality, office and retail projects.

What trimless and plaster-in downlights mean
A trimless (plaster-in) downlight finishes flush with the plaster line so the bezel disappears into the ceiling plane. In UK trade language it is often called a plaster-in downlight. The aim is a continuous ceiling surface with less visual clutter than a visible ring.
A trimmed or flanged recessed downlight sits in a cut-out but keeps a visible bezel or flange at the ceiling face. Both are recessed luminaires; the difference is whether the edge reads as part of the architecture or as a discrete fitting.
Specifiers choose trimless when they want the ceiling to read as one plane. Trimmed fittings can still be the right call where service access, refurb sequencing or a deliberate flange detail matter more than a flush finish.
Trimless vs recessed with trim: when to specify which
Trimless and plaster-in options need coordination with wet trades and ceiling build-ups. Access for future service should be planned early, because the fitting is intended to disappear into the finish.
Trim or flange recessed fittings are often quicker on many refurb ceilings, and a visible ring can be a design choice rather than a compromise. Kup, for example, uses a raised edge as part of its character.
Installation sequencing sits with the contractor and design team. Light Division supplies Modular luminaires and technical support; it does not install.
Modular trimless options for UK ceilings
These Modular families have verified trimless or plaster-in routes for UK specification. Always re-check the live article and datasheet for the exact code you intend to use.
Minude Recessed Trimless
Minude includes a named recessed trimless variant for deep-recessed accent light. Published product pages list a cut-out of Ø79 mm with the recessed or concrete ring, 100 mm mounting depth, IP54, and a constant-current driver. The wider Minude family also includes Semi-Recessed options that rotate 360° and tilt up to 90°. See the Modular Minude story.
Qbini Frame Recessed Trimless
Qbini Frame holds one to four Qbini miniature spots in a recessed frame available in trim or trimless versions. Designed by Florent Coirier, it uses press-in and press-out positioning. The frame and spotlights are specified together; the frame is not a complete product on its own. See Qbini Frame and the trimless SF article.
Thimble
Thimble is a recessed downlighter with an ultra-thin flange or a trimless execution, a deep-recessed source and anodised finishes. See the Thimble product story.
Other recessed Modular families may offer trimless variants in the configurator. Confirm each article before naming it trimless in a specification.
Modular recessed companions (trim and character)
Not every recessed fitting is plaster-in. These companions help when you need character, broader coverage or multi-optic layouts without inventing a "large trimless" SKU.
Klevr: Ø72 recessed spot with a TIR lens, five beam angles, up to 760 lm and a toolless build. Klevr story.
Kup: Ø72 cup-shaped recessed spot with a raised edge, five beams, up to 760 lm and IP55 for living spaces, bathrooms and humid environments per the product story. Kup story.
Modest: classic round recessed with black or white structure, brushed colours and Modular Custom RAL/NCS options. CCT options include 2700K, 3000K, 3500K, 4000K and warm dim 1800–3000K per the product story. Modest story.
Tetrix Frame: combinable recessed downlights with deep-recessed sources, accessories such as honeycomb, snoot and light cones, warm dim, remote driver options with Hue or Casambi modules, and IP55 across the range including adjustable versions. Tetrix Frame story.
Smart Lotis, Smart Kup and Smart Cake Recessed: a mix-and-match accent family with accessories and warm dim. Smart family.
"Large trimless downlight" without inventing a SKU
Search Console shows interest in "large trimless downlight", but Modular does not publish a product literally named that way in the pages checked for this guide. Practical routes include multi-head Qbini Frame (one to four spots), combining several Minude or Thimble apertures, or choosing flood beams on Modest, Tetrix or Klevr for broader coverage. Always take cut-outs from the live datasheet rather than quoting unverified diameters.
UK specification notes for architects and M&E
Modular products are made to order. Light Division does not hold UK stock. Lead times are confirmed per order and are approximate.
Samples are free. They are illustrative; see terms for ordering wording.
Technical files such as IES and LDT sit on the relevant supermodular.com product pages or can be requested. Do not rely on outdated cut sheets without checking the article for your exact code.
Catalogue and downloads: tracked catalogue or downloads.
Coordination with ceiling build-ups, service access and fire strategy remains the design team's responsibility. Prefer verified IP statements only (for example Minude Recessed Trimless IP54; Kup and Tetrix Frame product stories state IP55). Do not assume a fire rating from an IP figure.

Frequently asked questions
What is a trimless downlight?
A trimless (plaster-in) downlight finishes flush with the plaster so the bezel disappears into the ceiling plane. In UK trade use it is often called plaster-in. It differs from a trimmed recessed downlight, which keeps a visible flange or ring at the ceiling face.
